Zinovy Margolin

Set Designer

Born in Minsk (Byelorussia).
Graduated from the Byelorussian Academy of Arts in 1982. Was engaged as the principal designer with the Byelorussian Youth Theatre and has designed productions for the Moscow Russian Army Theatre (The Winded Horse) and St Petersburg’s Grand Drama Theatre (Les Caprices de Marianne, Californian Suite, The Dresser, Quartet and The Night Before Christmas).

From 1998 to 2000, was the principal designer with the St Petersburg Chamber Opera Company, where he designed productions including Siegfried Matthus’ Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Cornets Christoph RilkeThe Queen of Spades and Madama Butterfly.

Among his works are:
Boris Godunov (National Academic Opera Theatre of the Republic of Byelorussia, 2001), the musical Nord-Ost(Moscow, 2002), Le Boulevard du Crime (Yevgeny Vakhtangov Theatre, 2003), Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (Rostov Musical Theatre, 2003, 2004), Anna Karenina and The Seagull(St Petersburg Boris Eifman Ballet Theatre; 2005, 2007), The Humpbacked Horse, The Pickwick Club(Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre; 2008, 2009), and the musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (Children’s Musical Theatre Carambole, 2009), L’italiana in Algeri (Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre, 2013).

At the Moscow’s Pushkin Drama Theatre he designed Bullets Over Broadway (2007), Locusts (2008), The Robbers (2009), Much Ado About Nothing (2011), The Great Magic (2012), Is He Dead? (2012), The Marriage of Figaro (2014), The Kamerny Theatre (2014).

At the Mariinsky Theatre he has designed the operas The Nose (2004), The Tsar’s Bride (2004), Tristan und Isolde (2005), The Gambler (2007), Jenufa (2007), Benvenuto Cellini (2007), Otello (2007), Smelkov’s The Brothers Karamazov (2008), Shchedrin’s Dead Souls (2011), Les Contes d’Hoffmann (2011), Dargomyzhsky’s Rusalka (2013) and Shostakovich’s ballet The Golden Age (2006).

At the Bolshoi Theatre he has designed the operetta Die Fledermaus (stage director Vasily Barkhatov, 2010).
