Bolshoi Ballet Returns to Paris after 4-year Interval
Four years ago, the Bolshoi Ballet had Paris audiences at its feet. Balletomanes liked everything: they noted the dancers’ virtuosity, the variety in repertoire, and the exuberant joie de vivre and choreographic inventiveness of the ballet The Bright Stream. In including the latter ballet in the tour program, the Theatre thought they were taking a risk — Western audiences might not understand a work centered round “life on a collective farm”. But their fears proved to be unjustified: The Bright Stream caused a real sensation.
It was then, in Paris, that the choreographer of The Bright Stream, Alexei Ratmansky, was officially introduced to the Company as its new Artistic Director. And that Svetlana Zakharova who, at this point in time, had only recently joined the Bolshoi, shouted “For Motherland!”, as she made her way to the stage on the first evening of the tour to dance the lead in Swan Lake. A much discussed incident which stuck in everyone’s mind and will go down in the annals of Bolshoi Theatre history. It is quite obvious Parisians are preparing to evaluate how their impressions of this tour measure up to those of four years ago.
Shown in Paris then was the Petipa ballet, La Fille du Pharaon, as reconstructed by the Frenchman, Pierre Lacotte. In January, we will be presenting a Petipa reconstruction of our own, Le Corsaire, by Ratmansky and his colleague Yuri Burlaka.
Four years ago, an injury suffered a few months before the tour, prevented Nikolai Tsiskaridze from appearing before the Paris public in the ballet Pique Dame, choreographed by another French friend of the Bolshoi’s — Roland Petit. This time round, Tsiskaridze will be taking part in the tour and Pique Dame will be going to Paris too — and not just with Tsiskaridze, for there will be two Hermanns.
In London (2006), Ratmansky’s ballet Jeu de cartes got a rapturous reception — now it is the Parisian balletomanes who will give their views of this work. Also included in the forthcoming Paris tour is a masterpiece — every bit as magical as Swan Lake — of Russian ballet: The Shades act from La Bayadere, in which Svetlana Zakharova will again demonstrate her skills as well as one of the Company’s great ballerinas of the older generation — Nadezhda Grachyova.
The ever-popular Soviet ballet hit — Yuri Grigorovich’s Spartacus — will come with two surprises in the form of lead role soloists. Namely, Bolshoi guest premier, Denis Matvienko (he will be dancing in other roles during the tour) and Carlos Acosta whose inimitable Spartacus stunned Moscow audiences and even critics.
