The legendary family ballet-fairy tale Cipollino, whose main characters and plot have been beloved by generations of audiences, has returned to its original stage at the State Kremlin Palace. The ballet was first presented on this stage over 40 years ago and immediately won the hearts of viewers.
The foundation of the magical stage action is the unparalleled choreography of Heinrich Mayorov, expressed through a multifaceted, humorous, and satirical language of dance, complemented by the magnificent music of Karen Khachaturian and the stunning scenography of Valery Levental. This outstanding “trio” creates a complete and immersive narrative, allowing the audience to fully enter the atmosphere of the performance.
Thanks to the magnificent music of Karen Khachaturian, one of the brightest and most talented representatives of the great Khachaturian dynasty of composers and conductors, the main ideas and plot of the ballet come alive in the imagination. The characters are fully realized and easy to understand, even for the youngest viewers, inspiring genuine delight and fostering an appreciation for beauty.
The breathtaking scenography by Valery Levental, set designer at the Bolshoi Theatre, who has created productions both in Russia and abroad on the world’s finest dramatic and musical stages, including Italy’s La Scala in Milan and Teatro Comunale di Bologna in Bologna, enriches the overall picture and gives the plot completeness, allowing the audience to deeply feel and fully immerse themselves in the magical stage world.
Cipollino is a true celebration of essential values: teamwork, relationships among loved ones, camaraderie and mutual support among friends, belief in the best, and the fight for justice.
This fairy-tale ballet, based on the work of Italian writer Gianni Rodari and performed by the artists of the Kremlin Ballet theatre, is intended for family viewing. SynopsisACT ONE
The square of the fairy-tale town. At first glance, it seems that baskets for vegetables and crates for fruits stand on the square. In reality, these are small and large houses where vegetables and fruits live, who resemble humans in so many ways…
On the square, the Radish family meets the Onion family. Mrs. Cipolla and Mr. Cipollone scold the restless Cipollino, who is tired of babysitting his little sister, Cipolletta. Nearby, Master Grapelina is repairing shoes. Uncle Pumpkin searches for bricks to build his own house. Professor Pear plays the violin, and all the town’s inhabitants dance. Suddenly, Signor Tomato bursts onto the square and announces that Prince Lemon himself will soon arrive, wishing to speak to his people. The prince has issued a new law: everyone must pay for the sunshine, for the rain, and for the blowing wind.
The townsfolk are outraged. In the resulting crowd, Cipollino accidentally steps on Lemon’s foot. The guards are furious, as the prince has been insulted! “The rebel” must be punished. But Cipollino disappears, and the guards arrest old Cipollone instead.
It is not only the Onion family who mourns. Pumpkin is also in distress, unable to build a house for himself. The town’s residents, led by Cipollino, come to his aid. As soon as the construction is complete, Signor Tomato appears again. He nearly bursts with rage when he sees the house, as it was built on the land of Countess Cherry, which only she and her kin have the right to use.
Prince Lemon’s guards destroy Pumpkin’s house. The poor old man is in despair. Cipollino decides to take revenge on the offenders.
ACT TWO
Cipollino and his friend Radishette go to the palace to find the dungeon where Lemon has imprisoned old Cipollone. On their way, they meet Cherry, who is lonely and sad living in the palace, and a friendship develops between them. While searching for the prisoner, the friends narrowly escape from Signor Tomato, managing to evade capture. Meanwhile, during a ball held by Countess Cherry in honor of Prince Lemon, the friends free Cipollone.
Lemon’s guards and the palace police are searching everywhere for the fugitives. Cipollino hides his father and then Radishette, but Cipollino himself is surrounded by the guards and thrown into the dungeon.
The castle is quiet. Cherry and the beautiful Magnolia search for Cipollino. Magnolia, with her intoxicating scent, lulls the guards to sleep, and Cherry ties them up and frees Cipollino.
Prince Lemon descends into the dungeon to punish the mischievous rebel, only to find the guards tied up and the dungeon empty. Enraged, the prince orders the city to be fired upon with cannons. But Cipollino and his friends manage to shove Prince Lemon himself into the cannon.
When the smoke clears, there is no sign of Lemon, the cannon, or the guards. From now on, peace will reign in the fairy-tale town. Under warm sunshine and a blue sky, a new city will rise — a city of friends!
