Photo: Damir Yusupov " A Legend of Love " at the Bolshoi - All lifts are not so easy to do; they are very risky today as well. They surprise and astonish as much as they did during the first premiere. Besides, whether the production is considered modern or old-fashioned is something that depends not on the choreography, but on the artists. For example, we do not dance the ballet "Swan Lake" in the same manner that people danced it when it was first created. The same can be said about "A Legend of Love". Moreover, this ballet has everything that will always make a great success. Like all ballets by Grigorovich, it has phenomenal mass scenes, when a great number of people move across the stage to loud music and form various patterns. It has real male dances, which is extremely beautiful. - She is unhappy. During the whole story she does not smile for a single time, because she is unhappy from the very beginning till the very end. The only thing that she - and I - has to go through is the unthinkable pressure at the end of her tether. At first it is desperation and being angry with her court that cannot find a cure for the terminal illness of her sister Shireen, then there is the painful choice and sacrifice, when she gives her beauty for the life of her dear sister. Then the young man they both fall in love with chooses the pretty sister, and Mekhmene has only pain, suffering and torment. It is impossible not to feel her grief and horror when she puts on the mask to cover her face forever. Of course, I feel pity for her and I hope the audience will feel this pity as well. - It is hard to say. When I entered the choreographic institute at the age of ten it was hard, but I was sure this was the way it was supposed to be. When you learn to overcome yourself it becomes a norm and then you do not even think about it. Well, my childhood did end when I was ten years old, but I do not feel that I did not get something important or should have had more time to play games and have fun. Everything was right and everything was to my benefit. Perhaps, thanks to ballet I avoided some difficulties that teenagers usually face, because all I thought about was studying, practicing and becoming the best in what I was doing. Of course, people of art sacrifice themselves for it. But talking about myself, I would put this word in quotes. Thanks to my "sacrifice" the world opened for me. If I had a dif ferent profession, I probably would not have visited so many cities and countries, seen so many theatres and met so many extraordinary and talented people. - I cannot remember any occasions when we quarreled about something or had some heated arguments. We always ask each other for advice and make plans together. If it is necessary to give something up so that the family can stay together, each of us will do everything for it. The main things in a family are love and respect. If people understand this, there are no major disagreements. Our family is big and friendly. I have lived with my mother for my whole life; she is my good angel. Since Anyuta was born, I simply cannot imagine my life without my mother's help. - She started dancing as soon as she started walking. When she was two years and three months old, she watched the whole production of "Giselle" that I performed. This means a lot. There were times when she watched the famous recording of the ballet "The Nutcracker", starring Ekaterina Maximova and Vladimir Vasiliev, for a whole day. If she hears the music from "The Nutcracker", she recognizes it at once. - I do not mind her doing ballet, because this is good for a girl. Right now she is too small to understand what her talents and abilities are. But I will be happy if she starts dancing. If something goes wrong, the main thing is to understand it in time and stop. - Of course there is not enough time; my schedule is extremely busy. But after a rehearsal I rush home to spend an evening with my daughter. If a tour lasts a week or more, my mother and Anya come with me. Vadim also comes to us, no matter where we are, even if he can come for just 24 hours. We try not to part for a long time. This is a great support for me, because it is sad to return to an empty hotel room after a rehearsal. But I often say that I am not going to a hotel, but home. Because my home is where my family is. An exhibition of Russian costumes opened in Belfast An exhibition of Russian costumes from the Bolshoi Theatre opened in Belfast (Northern Ireland), which is famous for the fact that "Titanic" was floated out there. The exposition is a part of the Year of Russian Culture in the UK. The unique collection of 50 costumes (the exhibits vary from kokoshniks to tutu skirts) was brought to Ireland from Russia. Visitors have a chance to take a look at the stage costumes for Bolshoi Theatre's classical productions - "Swan Lake" and "The Golden Cockerel". As the visitors enter, they are greeted by a ballerina. Besides, the exposition has authentic national costumes from the Russian Museum of Ethnography. It is worthy of note that the exhibition of Russian costumes is organized in the building of a former prison, which is known as "European Alcatraz". In 2012, after a reconstruction, it became a tourist center. Newsletter November, 5 2014 " Opera Ball " in honor of Elena Obraztsova Bolshoi Theatre in the Internet Newsletter , 7 On the Bolshoi Theatre official pages in the social networks we also published an invitation to the concert of the Bolshoi Theatre Woodwind Quintet, which takes place on November 5th and marks the release of the first CD. The Bolshoi Brass Quintet and the Violin Ensemble, which has been revived recently, was founded by a group of musicians from the Bolshoi; the woodwind soloists and artists have also united their efforts and founded the Bolshoi Woodwind Quintet. The participants are: Nikolai Popov (flute) a laureate of international and all-Russian competitions, an Honored Artist of Russia and all-Russian competitions' laureate Sergei Lysenko (oboe), winner of the 1st prize at the N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov Competition in Saint Petersburg Sergei Petrov (clarinet), artistic director of the project "Bassoon+" Andrei Rudometkin (bassoon) and Alexei Raev (French Horn) laureate of all-Russian and international competitions, winner of the "Yamaha Scholarship" prize and the Bolshoi Theatre's Board of Trustees Prize. The group started giving concerts in 2013 when they were "blessed" by Vassily Sinaisky, who was Bolshoi's music director at that time. The Quintet recently performed at the project "The Night of Music" (October 4th ). However, this time the musicians present their own CD. The concept of the CD is unusual; the program includes only original pieces for a woodwind quintet composed by Russian composers of the 19th and the 20th century. Alexander Alyabyev, one of the founders of Russian professional music and the author of numerous chamber instrumental pieces, was the first composer who started writing music for such ensembles. A quintet by Edison Denisov represents a very different epoch; this is one of the early pieces composed by the most prominent representative of the Soviet musical avant-garde. Finally, there is the quintet "One Day in the Village", composed by Evgeny Svetlanov, an outstanding conductor, composer and pianist; a whole epoch in the existence of the Bolshoi Theatre is connected with the name of this musician… The CD (and the concert as well) also has pieces composed by the participants of the quintet; several of them are talented composers. There is a Fantasy on the theme from the opera "The Queen of Spades" by P. T chaikovsky, written by Sergei Lysenko, and "Carnival of Animals and Insects" by Nikolai Popov. The famous music critic and composer Petr Pospelov will be the MC. Many broadcasters and newspapers continue to report on the projection of the emblem for the 2018 football World Cup on the Bolshoi Theatre including Associated Press and The Guardian, reporting that FIFA apologises for a video showing Crimea as part of Russia, and also The Week (UK) and CTV News (Canada). Belfast NewsLetter highlights the main events at the Belfast Festival at Queen's, including the "beautiful exhibition of costumes from the Bolshoi Ballet". In an interview for Amsterdam News, Arthur Mitchell, the founder of the historic Dance Theater of Harlem, recalls a trip to Russia when he was "treated like royalty" and where he saw the flowering of the career of Precious Adams who was then studying at the Bolshoi. Sarasota Magazine followed Iain Webb, the artistic director of Sarasota Ballet, through a typical day in his life. He says that his style is influenced by Balanchine, the Bolshoi, the Royal Danish Ballet and more. Paris Normandie publishes a story about the new head of Gaumont Cinema from Docks V auban, Le Havre. He says that the live broadcasts from the Bolshoi Ballet from Moscow or the Metropolitan Opera from New York have a loyal audience who wouldn't be able to attend them otherwise. November, 5 2014
