Giuseppe Verdi's masterpiece, the opera "Rigoletto", is back at the Bolshoi Theatre New Stage. International and Russian mass media write about the upcoming broadcast of the ballet "The Nutcracker" in cinemas A big exhibition at the Memorial Estate of F.I. Chaliapin, marking the jubilee of the great opera singer Elena V. Obraztsova, has been prolonged until January 25th 2015 Facebook: take part in the Bolshoi Theatre's competition and win tickets for "The Nutcracker"; congratulations to artists on their birthdays December 18th - Irina Udalova (soprano), an Honored Artist of Russia and the Bolshoi Theatre soloist, celebrated her birthday . Our best wishes to the singer! December 14th, 16th - 21st - premiere series of "Rigoletto" December 9th - 19th - the famous American singer Carol Vaness is working with the participants of the Bolshoi Theatre Young Artists Opera Program December 21st - live broadcast of the ballet "The Nutcracker", staged at the Bolshoi Theatre, at a thousand cinemas around the world Historic Stage - The Nutcracker . Photo: Damir Yusupov December 21st - do not miss the live broadcast of the ballet "The Nutcracker", presented by the Bolshoi Ballet, at 1140 cinemas around the world www .youtube.com/user/bolshoi " Rigoletto " at the Bolshoi V alery Alexeev (baritone) creates a very precise image of a person in a mask, especially in the third act, when the jester has to act out a performance for people that lied to him and kidnapped his daughter . W e see the clown but hear a heart filled with anxiety and grief; we can also feel Rigoletto's humiliation. In the finale, when the jester hears the Duke's voice, he almost loses his mind; he tries to find the "exit", goes through the curtain tucks and finds the corpse of his daughter in a sack. The final scene and Gilda's final arias are, perhaps, the most powerful fragments of the whole production (therefore, as it was said in one popular Soviet film, they are remembered best and have the strongest effect). The dying Gilda is already thinking about ascension into the sky , she stretches her hands up, where a trapeze artist is flying against the background of a wide wine-red piece of cloth. It looks like this is either the girl's soul, or the soul of her mother , who died very young. Quite recently Gilda herself has been flying under the big top; she was inspired by her feeling and repeating the name (a fake one, unfortunately) of her lover like a prayer . Robert Carsen makes it dif ficult for the singer: she has not only to demonstrate absolute freedom up there, but also sing one of the most difficult arias that has extremely high notes. The Belgium singer Anne-Catherine Gillet could not relax; it was clear that both her body and her voice were tense. This happened when she was in the "sky" and down on the stage as well; sometimes the singer's intonation was not very precise, and sometimes she did not have enough breath. Fabrizio Paesano could not always cope with his voice, which is rather bright. Valery Alexeev , as it has been mentioned above, is one of those singers that can convey the meaning with the help of their voice; however , due to his age the voice let him down sometimes. Only two bass singers, the heart-broken Monterone (Vyacheslav Pochapsky) and the greedy assassin Sparafucile (Alexander Tsymbalyuk) were convincing. The conductor Evelino PidГІ is considered a specialist of Italian opera; he managed to turn the heavy orchestra machine into a light feather bed, but did not do anything else. However , one would expect the orchestra in Verdi's operas to be not only an accompanist, but a full-fledged participant of the drama. "About Elena Obraztsova with love…" A big exhibition, marking the jubilee of the great opera singer Elena V. Obraztsova, opened at the Memorial Estate of F.I. Chaliapin on October 14th; at the visitors' request it has been prolonged until January 25th 2015. Various concerts and educational programs will be organized as part of this project. The People's Artist of the USSR, Hero of Socialist Labor, laureate of Lenin and State prizes - Elena Obraztsova has lots of various titles, but there is one thing that is the most important: the singer's creative career symbolizes the prosperity of the Russian vocal school in Newsletter

The premiere series of the opera "Rigoletto", staged by Robert Carsen, is now showing at the Bolshoi Theatre The Bolshoi Theatre and TASS signed an agreement on informational cooperation again The Bolshoi denies the rumors Facebook: congratulations to artists on their birthdays; behind the scenes of "The Nutcracker": real magic in Instagram! December 17th - Dinara Alieva (soprano), the Bolshoi Opera soloist, and Nelli Kobakhidze, the Bolshoi Ballet soloist, celebrated their birthdays. Our best wishes to the artists! December 14th, 16th - 21st - premiere series of "Rigoletto" December 9th - 19th - the famous American singer Carol Vaness is working with the participants of the Bolshoi Theatre Young Artists Opera Program December 21st - live broadcast of the ballet "The Nutcracker", staged at the Bolshoi Theatre, at a thousand cinemas around the world Historic Stage - Nutcracker . Ballet in two acts New Stage - Rigoletto. Opera in three acts. PREMIERE The Bolshoi Theatre and TASS signed an agreement on informational cooperation again. Photo: Damir Yusupov Grimaldi Forum in Monaco is ready for the opening of the Year of Russia. Photo: Katerina Novikova " Rigoletto " at the Bolshoi of f disgustedly as soon as his working day is over; but in fact this is a complicated character . He knows no mercy as he laughs at someone else's grief, he is an unhappy entertainer of the crowd, he is a loving, but too tyrannical father. All episodes are set at the circus. Rigoletto, with his face painted white, sneers and tries to make others laugh. The handsome Duke wears jeans and watches the performance from the box. Mean members of the court nobility in the semi-circle rows giggle. There is also the old gypsy caravan, where the jester and his daughter live; Rigoletto's daughter looks like an obedient school girl, wearing socks. The assassin Sparafucile lives in the corner of the arena. This buffoon is a complicated character that hides behind his mask; he knows no mercy as he laughs at someone else's grief, he is an unhappy entertainer of the crowd. Photo: Oleg Chernous Circus allows Carsen to draw powerful parallels: in the words of Shakespeare's Macbeth, the life of his Rigoletto is "a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing". At the same time, it is at the circus where one can soar into the sky , both literary and figuratively speaking. This is precisely what Gilda's soul does. T wice. It happens when the heroine sings about her love for the Duke, swinging on the swing, and when she dies in her father's hands, trying to save her lover's live, and her mysterious shadow (a trapeze artist) spins and then lands dead below the fly gallery . Carsen uses naked bodies. In one scene the group of "tigresses", topless female supernumeraries, dressed in "leopard" panties, surrounds the Duke, who represents alpha male and the "tamer". In a dif ferent scene the Duke, this tireless lover-boy , sings a song and undresses; well, everything is rather decent - he puts on a robe, turns his back to the audience and the viewers only catch a short sight of his naked behind. One should remember , that the Duke sings as he tames the women; he sings about women, and this is all about carnal pleasures. He is only interested in a woman's body that can be easily substituted with another one. Here is the materialization of male fantasies: a whole lot of chicks. As soon as the dancing is over , they put on their robes; it is clear that they are tired after the routine "cheesecake". For many members of the audience naked bodies are like a red flag for the bull: as soon as the bull sees the flag, it gets angry . However , unlike the bull, a human should be able to read the signs, including the director's messages, and understand the dif ference between provocation for the sake of provocation and the suitable carnal metaphor . The audience that came to the premiere should be given credit for their reserved reaction to naked girls and only whispering something nervously to their neighbors during the scene of the Duke's stripping. Carsen attracts attention to the Duke's blatant cynicism: he has just sang the aria about "real love", crying false tears about the fate of the kidnapped Gilda, but as soon as he learned that she was hidden in his palace, he returned to his carnal pleasures right away . The orchestra, conducted by the Italian maestro Evelino PidГІ, was very tactful to the singers, and this is its main strength. The Greek baritone Dimitris Tiliakos (Rigoletto) tried very hard to play the part of the jester , but his voice is too high for this part and often vibrated. Kristina Mkhitaryan (Gilda) has a strong and even soprano, but she did not cope with Verdi's coloraturas very well; her manner is too aggressive and Newsletter

Many Russian mass media sources discuss the international production of the opera "Rigoletto" The Bolshoi Ballet will open the Year of Russia in Monaco with the production of "The T aming of the Shrew" Russian and French Young Artists Programs at the Bolshoi "Orpheus" reports about the concert of the new program "'Faces' of the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra" Facebook: Robert Carsen at the Green Room December 14th, 16th - 21st - premiere series of "Rigoletto" December 9th - 19th - the famous American singer Carol Vaness is working with the participants of the Bolshoi Theatre Young Artists Opera Program December 21st - live broadcast of the ballet "The Nutcracker", staged at the Bolshoi Theatre, at a thousand cinemas around the world Historic Stage - Nutcracker . Photo: Damir Yusupov " Rigoletto " at the Bolshoi Silicone and live dolls of Rigoletto the jester Dimitris Tiliakos as Rigoletto. Photo: Oleg Chernous The long-awaited premiere of Verdi's opera "Rigoletto", staged by the world-famous Canadian director Robert Carsen, is presented on the Bolshoi Theatre New Stage This is a co-production of the famous Festival d'Aix-en-Provence and four major European opera houses - Opéra National du Rhin, Theatre La Monnaie (Belgium), Grand Théâtre de Genève, and the Bolshoi Theatre. The production is performed in the Russian capital at the end of its two-year European tour; it has already gained the reputation of a provocative show. Carsen sets the story at the circus; Rigoletto is not a royal jester , but a lustful buffoon, who is not physically , but mentally challenged. He does not see any difference between a silicone doll from a sex-shop and his own daughter . His life is saturated with the stench of carnal pleasures. The entrance of the stark naked Duke is the apotheosis. The audience giggles nervously every once in a while. The director attracts the audience's attention with these cheesecake images; however, he also takes the action to the very top level of psychological theatre, as he "sentences" all characters to death for their inability to love. But here is why the Bolshoi's production is a catastrophe: there is the director's idea, but there is no musical concept whatsoever . The choir and the soloists do not work together with the dull orchestra, and Evelino PidГІ (Italy) does a rather poor conducting job. Popular melodies of the genius Giuseppe Verdi sometimes are almost impossible to recognize. Besides, not all singers of the opening night cast have the right vocal skills for their parts. The tenor Sergey Romanovsky (the Duke) and Kristina Mkhitaryan (Gilda) are young and charming, but their singing is not impeccable yet. Dimitris Tiliakos (baritone) rather recited the part of Rigoletto, but hardly sang anything. As a result, the production looked like a professional strip-show , a circus performance or, perhaps, a musical, but could be hardly called an opera production that one would expect to see at the Bolshoi Theatre. However, the director supposes that there will be people that will be against this non-traditional interpretation of the opera as well. "Rigoletto" is based on the drama "Le roi s'amuse" by Victor Hugo. Verdi set the opera in the middle of the 18th century; the production premiered on March 11th 1851 at Teatro La Fenice (Venice). The opera was a huge success and soon appeared at theatres in many countries. The opera was first performed in Russia in 1853; an Italian company presented the production in Saint Petersburg. Lyric Scenes. Performed with one interval Historic Stage - rehearsal day The program "Rameau - MaГ®tre Г  Danser" - sophisticated 18th century pastorals - was presented on the New Stage. Photo: Damir Yusupov http://> November , 1 1 2014 Feel like a king Some gallant games were played at the Bolshoi Theatre Guest performances of the ensemble "Les Arts Florissants" took place on the Bolshoi Theatre's New Stage. The French guests brought to Moscow the program "Rameau - MaГ®tre Г  Danser". These are "ballets with singing" created by the composer Jean- Philippe Rameau during the baroque epoch. The baroque music ensemble "Les Arts Florissants" was founded by William Christie, a harpsichordist and a conductor; the name was inspired by the same-name opera of M.-A. Charpentier . The orchestra was founded in 1979; the musicians have played baroque instruments ever since. "Les Arts Florissants" is considered to be the model of authentic performance. Maestro Christie is not a very young person, but he is still extremely excited about immersing into ancient music and authentic performance. This is something that has won him tons of followers, although he has opponents as well; they say that we cannot know for certain how our ancestors played music three hundred years ago. But the point is that authentic performance is not about the imitation of something that ceased to exist a long time ago. But there is a dif ferent story. An authentic orchestra is like a utopia that came true. It is a modern masquerade in ancient costumes, the joy of discoveries, a happy cult of the past that is still interesting nowadays. There is no bigotry and formal archeology; there is rather a charming cultural game. Still, it demands precise knowledge of historical styles and approaches. Christie said two things: "A trip to the Bolshoi Theatre is like a trip to the Moon", and "W e will be watching music". Those two things determined the level and the aesthetics of the concert. "Les Arts Florissants" presented two pieces by Rameau that are performed rarely; the conductor revived them for the general public after they had been forgotten for a long time. The soprano and the tenor altino take simple props from wooden boxes as they declare their love to each other Rameau composed virtuoso trifles to entertain Louis XV in his hunting lodge, the Palace of Fontainebleau. Choreographic period pieces "Daphnis et Eglé" and "La naissance d'Osiris" were performed in intimate surroundings without the official royal protocol and for a narrow circle, the royal court. Both the author of the music and the listeners perceived those pieces as a disguised glorification of the authorities. The heroic pastoral of 1753 ("La naissance d'Osiris") celebrated the birth of a royal child, the future king Louis XVI; the opera-ballet "Daphnis et Eglé" (1754) was an allegory that praised the passion of Louis XV and Marquise de Pompadour . However , the director Sophie Daneman did not really care about the royal details. The choreographer Françoise Denieau did not care much whether the dances that she staged really complied with Rameau's times; the costume designer Alain Blanchot did not care either whether his light lower-class dresses were similar to the heavy , wide and long dresses worn by women who danced in royal ballets. The rest of the production team did not support Christie's strict authenticity; they created their own image of the 18th century that turned out not to be baroque but rather a realistic and free one. The production was tied with the orchestra that was sitting right there on the stage. Just like the music by Rameau, the production was filled with a solemn and yet innocent and naГЇve voluptuousness. Daneman took two stories, one about Osiris and one about Daphnis, and created a kind of duology . In "Daphnis et Eglé" the strolling company acts out a story about ideal lovers who did not know they were not just friends until a Cupid with paper wings made the couple open their eyes. The soprano and the tenor altino take simple props from wooden boxes as they declare their love to each other, while the thrilled crowd is dancing a sarabande, a jig and a gavotte. In the second ballet the same artists are singing but the heroine has a big belly and gives birth to Osiris in the finale; the God Jupiter comes from the theatre box and announces that Osiris was born. The Cupid and the Graces are elated again while the simple shepherds and shepherdesses can feel a little sad and uneasy . The mythological note does not interfere with the humaneness; after all, everyone - kings, peasants from the pastoral and members of the modern audience - understands the happiness of mutual love or the birth of a child. The choreographer Françoise Denieau created a dance that sometimes was very far from baroque. Of course, she read and used ancient choreographic tractates, where all pas were notes; such tractates were published in France in abundance while the Bourbons were ruling the country . Of course, the choreographer was guided by the main artistic thesis of that era - "grace as a virtue". But it feels like the combinations of movements in minuets and contradances come from a later era (perhaps the romantic ballet of the 19th century) and the part of the barefoot Cupid is rather about neoclassical dance. This is understandable: gods cannot move in the same manner as people. Christie's orchestra, which came to Russia for the fourth time, left the audience happy, as usual. There was the silver sound of the harpsichord, the noise of the metal sheet representing thunder, the tender sound of the baroque bassoon, the melodious charm of viola da gamba (baroque cello) and the baroque musette, a French instrument, which has the same sound as a Scottish bagpipe. Idyll is something that can rarely be found in modern art. This really is a royal luxury . With the help of music Christie and his "Les Arts Florissants" provided the audience with an opportunity to feel like royalty . Y ou know , this was a nice feeling. Bolshoi Theatre's prima ballerina Svetlana Zakharova will help the Kiev State Ballet School Svetlana Zakharova was born in Lutsk; naturally , she studied at the Kiev State Ballet School, which is the best ballet school in Ukraine. Today she is Bolshoi Theatre's prima ballerina and La Scala Ballet's etoile. She is a world-famous star! Last year Svetlana Zakharova, together with her colleague, Bolshoi Theatre's soloist Y uri Baranov , who studied in Kiev as well, visited her pedagogues; the ballerina was shocked when she saw the poor condition of her native ballet school. It was then that she had an idea to organize a charity concert (it will take place on the Bolshoi Theatre Historic Stage on December 7th); all money raised will be donated to the renovation of the Kiev State Ballet School. Other ballet stars who also used to study at this School and nowadays perform on the best stages around the world supported Svetlana Zakharova's idea. The list includes Ivan Putrov , who was named Britain's best young classical dancers by British ballet critics, and Sergei Volobuyev , a soloist of the Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg. Newsletter

Nina Timofeeva as Asel and Nikolai Fadeyechev as Ilyas in the ballet "Asel", Bolshoi Theatre Mass media about the Theatre in the ballet "Spartacus" together with her many times. We had a good contact, both professional and personal. Of course, it is dif ficult to get used to the idea that she is not with us anymore. It makes you understand how quickly the time flies and how short our life is. It happened so in her life that she left her motherland but I communicated with her daughter a lot and I know that she always took interest in what was happening at the theatre. When she was there, Bolshoi Theatre remained her life. She was interested in everything; she stayed informed about everything. Her creative career is a remarkable page in the Bolshoi Ballet's history, in the Russian ballet's history and in the world ballet's history as well. The audience both in Russia and abroad knew her well and loved her. She was always given tremendous ovations during Bolshoi Ballet's guest performances abroad. This is a tragic day for us. A whole epoch is passing away; the time that we lived in, created and worked with such outstanding artists and masters is passing away as well. Nina Timofeeva was truly one of Bolshoi Theatre's great masters that were jewels in the theatre's crown in the 1960s and 1970s". /…/ The Bolshoi Theatre Woodwind Quintet presented its first CD A concert "The Classics. Romanticism. Avant-garde" took place at the Bolshoi Theatre Beethoven Hall on November 5th. The Bolshoi Theatre Woodwind Quintet, founded one year ago, gave the concert to mark the release of its first CD. The Bolshoi Orchestra's woodwind soloists and artists founded the Bolshoi Woodwind Quintet; the ensemble started giving concerts in the end of 2013. Recently , the Quintet has participated in the "Night of Music". This time the musicians presented their own CD. Its concept is unusual: the program includes only original pieces for a woodwind quintet, composed by Russian composers of the 19th and the 20th centuries. Alexander Alyabyev was the first composer who started writing music for such ensembles. The quintet by Edison Denisov represents a very different epoch; this is one of the early pieces composed by the most prominent representative of the Soviet music avant-garde. There was also the quintet "One Day in the Village", composed by Evgeny Svetlanov , an outstanding conductor, composer and pianist; a whole epoch in the existence of the Bolshoi Theatre is connected with the name of this musician… The CD (and the concert as well) also has pieces composed by the participants of the quintet; several of them are talented composers. There is a Fantasy on the theme from the opera "The Queen of Spades" by P. T chaikovsky , written by Sergei Lysenko, and "Carnival of Animals and Insects" by Nikolai Popov. The model range The Bolshoi Theatre presents a new kind of festival: "Baroque. A Journey ". Y oung singers explore new territories and begin to enjoy what they are doing It was considered that the Bolshoi Theatre and baroque music did not really agree with each other. But today , when we already know the style of the Bolshoi Young Artists Opera Program, nothing surprises us. The young artists demonstrate equally successful performances of operas by Mozart, romances by Tchaikovsky and melodies by various French composers, from Berlioz to Messiaen. Why cannot they demonstrate a successful performance of baroque music as well? Moreover , such a well-rounded enthusiast as Philipp Chizhevsky joined this project. It was him, who conducted the program of Italian music at the Bolshoi Theatre Beethoven Hall; that program had mostly arias from baroque operas and oratorios. Maestro Chizhevsky not only feels the style of Vivaldi, Porpora, Cesti, Hasse and Broschi, but also makes it his own rather successfully; his manner is similar to improvisation and the authentic orchestra "Questa Musica", headed by the concert- master Sergei Filchenko, finds it easy to respond to it. Regardless of the fact that, strictly speaking, when it comes to baroque music there is no need to have a conductor , the concert almost convinced us to the opposite. The arias were performed by the participants of the Young Artists Opera Program; this Program has lately become the main "assembly line" that produces vocal "goods". Ekaterina Morozova, a slender and beautiful singer with a warm, resounding timbre, was the model example of the festival concert. She has a soprano of a wide range and impresses with her lower notes; she performed light coloraturas very nicely as well. Ruslana Koval, another participant of the Young Artists Opera Program, who has a light and flexible soprano, was good as well; Alexandra Chukhina (mezzo-soprano) demonstrated a nice performance and the duet of those two singers was especially good. Alexander Roslavets (bass), the only man, performed only one piece but left a positive impression as well. Compared to the fighting-mad young singers, Olga Kulchinskaya, who has a charming timbre and has already become a part of the Bolshoi Opera Company , created an impression of a mature lyrical heroine. Another trump card was saved till the very end: Christina Eshba, who is not on Bolshoi Theatre's list, performed the aria "Son qual nave" by Broschi (from the repertoire of the famous castrato singer Farinelli), where she demonstrated bright sound with brilliant coloratura and remarkable virtuosity. It looks like a whole handful of baroque singers appeared; these singers will soon be able to compete with famous foreign guest singers. " Don Carlo " with a residence permit in Moscow The series of performances of Verdi's masterpiece continues at the Bolshoi Theatre The opera "Don Carlo" premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre last year; as it had been anticipated, the premiere cast starred a lot of guest singers who mostly perform abroad. The performance which took place on November 1st was remarkable firstly because there were three debuts in the main parts and secondly because the cast starred only singers who perform at Moscow theatres; moreover, two of those singers have recently joined the Bolshoi Opera Company . Quite recently the words of Bolshoi Theatre's General Director Vladimir Urin, who stated that it was necessary to provide a decent level of performance not only when it came to premieres but also when it came to Bolshoi's regular repertoire, and who pointed out that the casts had to be formed using the theatre's own resources, have been perceived as some kind of a long-term project and a task for some distant future! But we can see that this task is already being fulfilled today. The title part does not have large solo numbers and perhaps is not really the main part; still it imposes serious requirements for a singer's voice. It has to be a good tenor with stable mezza voce that can balance between the heroic style of decisiveness and Carlo's helpless and infantile "Hamletism". Speaking of singers who were invited to perform this part in the previous series of performances, we can probably say that Andrea Caré, who performed it on the opening night, was the only one who really succeeded. V oices of Hector Sandoval and Dimitri Pittas obviously were not right for the Historic Stage; besides, those two singers demonstrated not very distinct acting on the edge of parody . Oleg Dolgov , who became famous as Novaya Opera's soloist and takes active part in projects of the Russian State Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Valery Polyansky , is a real savior for opera productions that need a tenor singer with remarkable dynamics and plastique. Dolgov has already performed the most difficult part of the Prince in the opera "The Enchantress" by Tchaikovsky on the Historic Stage; the Moscow audience also heard him performing Don Carlo last season, when Polyansky presented a concert version of this opera. The artist presented a very distinct image of this character: adolescent devotion and quick temper were portrayed without using small gestures, jactitation and hysteria that singers who perform this part often overuse. The same can be said about the vocal constituent of this part: the singer has remarkably bright fortes, but he used the power of his voice for the purpose intended, as he showed the ups and downs of his character's emotional state. Apart from minor faults, for example, some confusion with the text, Don Carlo, performed by Oleg Dolgov is probably the best; the fact that the singer joined the Bolshoi Opera Company in November can be considered not only a deserved and long-awaited event, but also an expected and appropriate one. Elena Obraztsova. Photo: ITAR-T ASS/Gennady Khamelyanin On Tuesday the People's Artist of the USSR Elena Obraztsova celebrated her 75th jubilee at the Bolshoi Theatre. The "Opera Ball" was organized in honor of the famous singer; world stars took part in the gala concert. Elena Obraztsova first came to the Bolshoi Theatre when she was a third-year student at the Leningrad Conservatoire. Obraztsova performed the part of Marina Mnishek in the opera "Boris Godunov" by M. Mussorgsky . She made her debut on December 17th 1963. The gala was attended by Svetlana Medvedeva, the spouse of the Russian Prime Minister , Valentina Matviyenko, the Chairman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, Olga Golodets, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, and People's Artists of the USSR Tamara Sinyavskaya and Makvala Kasrashvili. The Ball opened with the performance of Maria Guleghina. It was followed by performances of José Cura, Olga Peretyatko, Bruno PraticГІ, Ekaterina Siurina, Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Yulia Lezhneva. Anna Netrebko performed the aria of Macbeth from the same-name opera by Verdi. Then Elena Obraztsova appeared on the stage as the Countess from the opera "The Queen of Spades" by P. T chaikovsky . Hibla Gerzmava, Dinara Alieva and Yusif Eyvazov performed in the second part of the concert. Then the Mariinsky Theatre's prima Yulia Makhalina and the famous flamenco dancer Maía Pagés congratulated Elena Obraztsova. The Ball closed with "Libiamo ne' lieti calici" from the opera "La Traviata" by Verdi. It was performed by all participants of the gala, headed by Elena Obraztsova "Legend" is alive The ballet "A Legend of Love", choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich, returned to the Bolshoi Theatre; the influence that it has on the audience is as powerful as ever The part of the Queen suited Svetlana Zakharova very well. Photo: Damir Yusupov The main theatre of the country continues to bring back to the repertoire productions that could not be performed on the New Stage during the reconstruction of the Historic Building, because they would simply not fit on the stage. The time has come for "A Legend of Love", a large-scale ballet, choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich. The court of the Queen Mekhmene Banu marches and rushes in an inexorable chase in some ancient eastern kingdom; the painter , who paints the walls of the palace, causes emotional chaos in the souls of the queen and her younger sister. "A Legend of Love" (in ballet slang called simply "Legend") premiered at the Mariinsky (Kirovsky) Theatre in 1961; four years later it was staged at the Bolshoi and has never been absent from this stage for long ever since. The secret of its success is the well-coordinated work of a mechanism that consists of many parts. The score by Arif Melikov (when the ballet premiered, he was 27 years old) combines the practicality of ballet music and the orientation on symphony models. As the production was being staged, the composer had a serious quarrel with the choreographer , who wanted to get rid of one piece which was "too symphonic": he slammed the door and took the plane to his native Baku. Several days later he got a letter from the choreographer saying he was sorry and asking him to come back. The choreographer staged this scene (it was the chase scene, which turned out to be one of the best in the whole ballet). Yuri Grigorovich was 34 at the time, his career was developing successfully and his name was associated with such words, as "discovery", "talent" and "success", but not "multiplying of old discoveries" and "hunt for those who did not agree with him", which came much later . He created not just dances, but the distinct characters of the heroes: the Queen Mekhmene Banu, her sister Shireen and the painter Ferkhad. The Queen, who sacrificed her beauty for the life of her sister (this was the price that the wicked magician, who came when the girl was dying, asked for), and then found out that the only person, who was dear to her (Ferkhad), chose that very girl, got a part where a woman's pride and a woman's jealousy scream out loud, using the most classical yet revolutionary language. Mekhmene Banu throws her legs up and in front of her , like blades; the court Vizier , who decided to calm her down for practical reasons, is scared away by such a violent rebuf f. As she is thinking about Ferkhad, Mekhmene Banu bends into a bridge - in 1961 this was considered scandalous, but even today, when the theatre is open to the most straightforward choreographers and very naked bodies, this episode with the Queen, wearing leotards, looks like a provocative declaration of freedom. This ballet is about freedom. Nazym Hikmet, who wrote the story that the libretto is based on, spent one third of his life in Turkish prisons, because he was a communist and encouraged his fellow countrymen to start a revolution (The talent of a poet did Newsletter

Photo: Mikhail Logvinov bolshoi.ru/Damir Yusupov The most powerful culmination of the revived ballet happened several minutes after the end of the performance, when the whole cast gathered on the Bolshoi's stage and Zakharova brought to the stage maestro Grigorovich. The author of epoch-making ballets stood in the middle, the artists put flowers at his feet and moved to the curtain. This mise-en-scene revealed one peculiarity that is almost mystical. In some incomprehensible way this small and slim person conquered both the stage and the audience hall. /.../ The ballet "A Legend of Love " returned to the Bolshoi Theatre The grand premiere of the ballet "A Legend of Love" to the music by the Azerbaijani composer Arif Melikov took place at the Bolshoi Theatre last week. This was not only a new version of the production, which was staged by Yuri Grigorovich more than half a century ago, but also a piece that still looks very original; at some point this ballet marked the birth of a new style in ballet classics. It happened that Arif Melikov offered the score to the libretto by Nazym Hikmet , which he wrote following the recommendation of his teacher Kara Karayev , to the Kirov (Mariinsky) Opera and Ballet Theatre. The young and talented choreographer Yuri Grigorovich and the set designer Simon Virsaladze created a masterpiece of the 20th century ballet theatre. After this production was created, Grigorovich became the master , who rehabilitated the pure classical dance, which was losing its traditions in favor of dramatized scenes, depicting the life of the so-called man of labor . The choreographer's name symbolized the ascension of the Russian ballet to the world Olympus. The design of Simon Virsaladze determined the style of the production. It is sophisticated and does not have any unnecessary details; at the same time it is not all-suf ficient and provides freedom of movement in the eastern style, which determined many details of the choreographic language as well. This is true about the tangy flavor of solos and pas de deux, or the pattern of the mass scenes; this is even more true about the colorful choreographic characteristics of the main characters. In 1961 Grigorovich also personally staged his production in Baku, where the People's Artist of the USSR Leyla V ekilova demonstrated a brilliant performance in the role of Shireen, and the People's Artist of Azerbaijan Tamila Shiralieva created a bright and emotional image of Mekhmene Banu. Her partner , the People's Artist Maksud Mamedov , and other soloists of the Azerbaijan State Opera and Ballet Theatre, also had their say. "A Legend of Love" appeared at the Bolshoi Theatre a bit later; it was changed a bit, and stayed in the theatre's repertoire for a long time. It was a real jewel in the crown of the Bolshoi's ballet repertoire. This time the audience was presented with a new version. It has not been changed, and no new fragments have been added to it. Still, it is dif ferent. But the set, which was designed by Simon Virsladaze and which has become a legend a long time ago, has not changed: the open Quran, strict lines and somber colors instead of the theatrical East everyone is so used to, magnificent and sweet. The set was re-created in the Bolshoi's set departments, based on the designer's sketches. As for the atmosphere, which was created by the luminaries of the 1960s and 1970s, it has definitely changed after the reconstruction with the appearance of new ballerinas and new dancers… Svetlana Zakharova as Mekhmene Banu. Photo: Damir Yusupov After the pompous premiere, which was given a very warm welcome, the artists (Svetlana Zakharova - Mekhmene Banu, Denis Rodkin - Ferkhad and Anna Nikulina - Shireen) said it was very prestigious and at the same time very difficult to dance in the production that had such extraordinary style. It demands not only impeccable dance technique, but also the ability to convey the most complicated emotions to the audience. These are the emotions that give deep philosophical meaning to this eastern legend. Ballet productions are broadcast live at Russian cinemas again Photo: Damir Yusupov The Bolshoi Theatre opened a series of broadcasts The ballet "A Legend of Love", choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich, was the first production broadcast at the cinemas. This ballet has become the Bolshoi's symbol a long time ago; last week the revived version of the ballet premiered at the theatre. The cast starred Svetlana Zakharova, one of the world's leading ballerinas. This season the Bolshoi Theatre will present broadcasts of seven productions. Six of them were choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich. The list includes "Romeo and Juliette", "Ivan the Terrible" and "The Nutcracker". The only exception will be the ballet "Pharaoh's Daughter", staged by the French choreographer- restorer Pierre Lacotte Newsletter

The State Academic Bolshoi Theatre of the USSR. Photo: RIA NOVOSTI Y uri Grigorovich first staged this ballet at his native Kirov (Mariinsky) theatre in 1961. The libretto was based on the same-name play by Nazym Hikmet. The music was composed by Arif Melikov . The set was designed by Simon Virsaladze. The production was so ground-breaking for that time that it became an artistic sensation and a certain manifesto of the new ballet aesthetics, based on the unity of plot and the dramatic constituent and symphonic dance. "A Legend of Love" is a ballet not only about the feeling of love, but also about the meaning of love, about sacrifice and compassion and about the problems of moral choice. It really is an emotional reflection about the meaning of life. Grigorovich proved that the choreographic art was capable of embodying various philosophical and ethical problems, and he did it in a very convincing way. He proved it with his ballet "A Legend of Love", where commitment and nobility turn into sacrifice: in the beginning of the story Mekhmene Banu sacrificed her beauty in order to save her sister's life, in the end the painter Ferkhad sacrifices his love to Shireen to save the people.

"A Legend of Love " is back at the Bolshoi The gala concert "Opera Ball", marking the 75th anniversary of the outstanding singer Elena Obraztsova will take place on the Bolshoi Theatre's Historic Stage on October 28th The laureates of the 12th season of the literary award "Y asnaya Polyana" were announced at the Bolshoi Theatre Beethoven Hall Facebook: An additional performance of the ballet "A Legend of Love " will take place on November 5th November 5th - 9th - premiere performances of the ballet " A Legend of Love " October 24th - debuts in the opera " La Sonnambula " Filippo Adami makes his debut at the Bolshoi with the part of Elvino Laura Claycomb performed the main role Historic Stage - rehearsal day New Stage - rehearsal day The opening night cast starred Anna Nikulina as Shireen and Denis Rodkin as Ferkhad. Photo: Damir Yusupov " A Legend of Love ". Svetlana Zakharova as the Queen Mekhmene Banu. Photo: Damir Y usupov between two sisters who are both in love with him, and finding water for the people, was doomed to success. It suited the official ideology of the supremacy of the communal over the personal very well; at the same time it calmed the audience with its graceful love collision. The thick eastern color made its contribution as well: the libretto was written by the Turkish poet Nazym Hikmet and was based on his play and the ancient Persian legend, the music was composed by the Azerbaijani composer Arif Melikov , the set was designed by the great magician Simon Virsaladze. The choreography suited this setting very well; there were various positions, based on the eastern calligraphy , the delight of the female dance at the harem and the rashness of the chase. A few of the people most inclined to faultfinding noticed that this dance was somewhat similar to what Kasyan Goleizovsky did in "Leila and Medjun" a year earlier . Anyway , it was "A Legend of love" that became triumphant; it also remained a legend. This happened largely due to the fact that the bright production that tells the story of mulit-faceted love, always starred great artists. In Leningrad there were the breathtaking beauties Olga Moiseeva, Inna Zubkovskaya and Alla Osipenko. In Moscow there was Maya Plisetskaya and Maris Liepa. The Bolshoi's ballerina Svetlana Adyrkhaeva created a model image of the main female character; today she is rehearsing this part with Ekaterina Krysanova, the new Mekhmene Banu. Ulyana Lopatkina used to dance this part at the Mariinsky Theatre, and her fans cried at the premiere and did not try to hide their tears. This time the Bolshoi presents several casts; Svetlana Zakharova, who is in her best shape, is ready to make her voice heard. The conclusion: today's version of "A Legend of Love", which does not claim to be some kind of a new interpretation, will make ballet fans who love this performing art form, very happy . Perhaps, this is enough. "A Legend of Love" is back at the Bolshoi Svetlana Zakharova and Denis Rodkin. Photo: Damir Yusupov "A Legend of Love", one of Yuri Grigorovich's most famous ballets, which has already become one of the 20th century classics, is back on the main stage of the country . The audience has a chance to enjoy the eastern colors of the set and special plastique of the choreography . The theatre's administration promises that other landmark ballet will soon be brought back to the Bolshoi's stage as well. When you look at the bright costumes, which were re-created based on the sketches by Simon Virsaladze, the dynamic and light of the dance, you are totally immersed in the atmosphere of the "1000 and 1 nights" fairy-tales and do not think of what it has cost the artists. "A Legend of Love" has been a symbol of the Bolshoi for a long time, just like "Swan Lake". The very first cast starred Maya Plisetskaya as the Queen and Natalia Bessmertnova as her sister Shireen. They both are in love with the handsome Ferkhad (Maris Liepa). The theatre's new administration decided to re-create all ballets that have become Bolshoi trademarks long ago. The first step has been made. NTV reporter Alexei Ivliev reports that this is the ninth version of "A Legend of Love" by Yuri Grigorovich, and the third version that has been presented at the Bolshoi Theatre. The Maestro organized very strict auditions that not everyone managed to get through. The ballet was made a bit shorter and much more dynamic. Regardless of his age, Yuri Grigorovich did not miss a single rehearsal. It looks like he had enough time to work not with each soloist, but also with each corps de ballet artist; he demanded good acting and a finished performance. The Opera Ball in honor of Elena Obraztsova will take place at the Bolshoi Theatre The gala-concert "Opera Ball", marking the 75th anniversary of the outstanding singer Elena Obraztsova will take place on the Bolshoi Theatre's Historic Stage on October 28th. RIA NOVOSTI was provided this information by the Elena Obraztsova Foundation. On this day outstanding musicians and world opera and ballet stars will congratulate the opera diva. Anna Netrebko, Maria Guleghina, Olga Peretyatko, Ekaterina Siurina, Dmitri Hvorostovsky , José Cura and others will take part in the concert. The Bolshoi Theatre's prima ballerina Svetlana Zakhaova and the Mariinsky Theatre's prima Yulia Makhalina will dance in honor of Elena Obraztsova. The world- famous flamenco dancer Maía Pagés will perform for the opera diva as well. The Bolshoi Theatre's Orchestra will be conducted by the famous conductor Eugene Kohn. The director of the concert Dmitry Bertman told RIA NOVOSTI: "This concert is unique in terms of its star participants. Obraztsova prepared some surprises and was going to come on the stage herself. The singer will perform the part of the Countess from the opera "The Queen of Spades" by P. T chaikovsky . Quote of the day: Galina Vishnevskaya The famous opera singer compared her life with a series of dramatic challenges but said there had always been a place for good luck that had saved her. October 25th is a significant date for opera fans all over the world. Galina V ishnevskaya, the famous Soviet and Russian opera singer, would have turned 88 years old on this day. Y uri Grigorovich mentioned: "The new version that we present to the audience today stars the new cast, and this is, perhaps, the most important thing. The production stars a young cast; I think it is the 3rd or even the 4th generation of dancers that perform this ballet, which was created half a century ago. I am very happy that the prima-ballerina Svetlana Zakharova performs the main role in this production. The new quality and character of the dance that she presents suits this part very much". At the dress rehearsal the audience gave the prima ballerina deafening ovations and yelled "bravo"; it looks like she coped with this part very well. Svetlana Zakharova said: "A Legend of Love" for me is a chance to perform an interesting new role; I am very happy to have a chance to work with Yuri Grigorovich. Being a true artist, he has been adding some new details to this ballet during the whole history of its existence. "A Legend of Love" looks very modern and will definitely become a jewel in the crown of the Bolshoi's repertoire". The composer Arif Melikov attended the dress rehearsal and also plans to attend the premiere; he wished all dancers to get ovations that signify success and the audience's recognition. Success and recognition of the general public - these are what the creators of this ballet worked for. The composer said: "A Legend of Love" is about the 1960s, this is our youth; Yuri Grigorovich and I have been friends all these years, and I am very happy to see our creation on the Bolshoi Theatre's Historic Stage again". On October 26th the Bolshoi Theatre will open its new cinema season with the live broadcast of the ballet "A Legend of Love". Russian cinemas in various regions of Russia will broadcast the recording of the production on November 15th and 16th. The Bolshoi Theatre created "A Legend of Love" Y uri Grigorovich, the choreographer of the ballet "A Legend of Love". Photo: "Photo IT AR-T ASS" Agency The major revival of the ballet "A Legend of Love", choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich, was presented on the Bolshoi's Historic Stage on October 23rd; the ballet premiered in 1961 at the Mariinsky Theatre. In 1965 the production was presented in Moscow for the first time. The cast starred world legends, Maya Plisetskaya and Maris Liepa. Since that time until 2009 the ballet never disappeared from either the Bolshoi's or the Mariinsky's stages. "A Legend of Love" has eastern colors and a tragic after- taste. The Turkish poet Nazym Hikmet, who was who sentenced to 28 years in prison by the Turkish government, created this drama on the tenth year of his imprisonment. The Azerbaijani composer Arif Melikov composed the music, which expressed all the conflicts that "A Legend of Love" has. First of all, this is the conflict between feelings and duty. According to the ancient Persian legend, duty defeats feelings and it is even possible to part with your loved one and sacrifice your beauty for the happiness of other people. The cast of this "A Legend of Love" stars real ballet legends, just like it always has. The Bolshoi's prima ballerinas and soloists Maria Alexandova, Svetlana Zakharova, Maria Allash and Ekaterina Krysanova perform the main female role. The thing that makes everyone particularly happy about this revival is the fact that it is brought back to the stage by its creator , the outstanding choreographer Yuri Grigorovich. Direct speech Y uri Grigorovich, the choreographer of the ballet "A Legend of Love": - I staged this ballet long time ago; it has been performed for about 50 years, it has been put aside and brought back to the stage. Of course, the main theme and the choreographic motifs remains the same, but some new details have been added. Details are always very important. I am very happy that this ballet returns to the Bolshoi Theatre's Historic Stage. The return of the legend Why does the ballet "A Legend of Love" strike a chord even 50 years later? The Bolshoi Theatre with the support of VTB presents a major revival of the ballet "A Legend of Love". This production - a parable about the love of two royal sisters for a young painter , about painful attempts to make a choice and about sacrifices in the name of love and duty - has been staged at the biggest ballet stages for almost half a century . This ballet to the music by the Azerbaijani composer Arif Melikov , based on the play by the Turkish playwright Nazym Hikmet, was first staged by the choreographer Yuri Grigorovich and the designer Simon Virsaladze at the Kirov Theatre in Leningrad in 1961. Four years later "A Legend of Love" premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre. V ictories and negotiations: Grigorovich and Nureyev More than half a century ago the 34-year old choreographer Y uri Grigorovich was appointed to stage a production at the Kirov (Mariinsky) Theatre which was meant to become a milestone event in the history of Soviet ballet art. The artists were very enthusiastic; there were several star-studded casts that rehearsed "A Legend of Love". But Gigorovich, who was creating his own choreographic style, focused on young debutants that were not very famous at that time. There was only one dancer that the choreographer wanted to perform the part of the painter Ferkhad, who conquered the hearts of the powerful Queen Mekhmene Banu and her reverent sister Shireen. It was Rudolph Nureyev. It was the pedagogue Alexander Pushkin that suggested Grigorovich should pay attention to a young newcomer . Y ears later the choreographer said: "One day he told me that he had a very talented student. I looked at Nureyev and thought: this is Ferkhad. He is a Tatar , he is so slim and charming. But he had a terrible character". The choreographer himself also was tough and tyrannical; he did not make any compromises during the working process. This became the reason for a conflict; the grounds for this conflict were very well prepared, though. Back then the Kirov Theatre ballet company was headed by a famous classical dancer and choreographer Konstantin Sergeyev, who sidestepped his rivals in the challenging fight for this position. In 1965 "A Legend of Love" appeared on the Bolshoi Theatre's playbill. The ballet's plot was inspired by an ancient eastern legend. The ballet libretto was written by the outstanding Turkish poet Nazym Hikmet. The Bolshoi Theatre started to cooperate with Instagram Empty Bolshoi is the name of the project that marked the start of the Bolshoi's cooperation with the biggest social network. This Monday top Russian Instagram bloggers had a chance to get to the empty Imperial Foyer and backstage. 20 of the most popular Instagram bloggers that have more than 500 thousand followers had a chance to see the empty Bolshoi during non-operating hours and take pictures for their microblogs. The bloggers had about an hour to take pictures of the Bolshoi's deserted interiors. The pictures started to appear in their microblogs with the hashtag #EmptyBolshoi. As the Bolshoi's Press-Office said, "the main goal is to promote our page in Instagram and to get more followers". The "empty" movement started in New York; it was initiated by the Instagram user Dave Krugman (@dave.krugman), who invited several other Instagram users to a private meeting at the New York Metropolitan Museum during the Museum's non-operating hours in 2012. The pictures were uploaded to the social network with the hashtag #emptymet and started the whole movement, which the Metropolitan Museum, the Frieze fair, the Tatens Museum for Kunst (Royal Museum of Fine Arts) in Copenhagen and the Royal Opera in London have already joined. It says that the advantages include "The chairs are more comfortable, big shows and stars from London and Moscow can be seen in smaller towns and cities". Fidelity News (Italy) suggests a night at the Bolshoi Theatre as one of the options in a light hearted article about what to do on a night out in Moscow . Saratov mass media: " Russian theatre postcards (beginning of the 20th century) " is available in Saratov The exposition "The world of the Moscow Theatre. Russian theatre postcards (beginning of the 20th century). From the funds of the Russian State Art Library" opened at the Oblast' Universal Scientific Library. The whole world is familiar with successes of the Russian theatre school in the beginning of the 20th century; the names of outstanding representatives of theatre art became real symbols of Russian culture. Postcards that have portraits of famous opera and dramatic actors, as well as scenes from different theatrical productions, became a means of advertising, just like a playbill and a poster . It came into the life of Russian society in the very end of the 19th century; by the start of the 20th century it had become a real "trademark" of its time. The exhibition features postcards with portraits of famous Russian actors: representatives of the Sadovsky dynasty, the Maly Theatre actors A. Yuzhin, A. Ostuzhev , G. Fedotova and M. Ermolova, and actors of the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre, outstanding cultural luminaries F.I. Chaliapin, L.V. Sobinov . E. The Bolshoi Theatre enters into alliance with the community Instagram Russia The Bolshoi Theatre Young Artists Opera Program celebrated its 5th anniversary In his interview with "Izvestia" Vladimir Urin discussed how to present the productions of Russia's main theatre to the citizens of Russia Elena Obraztsova, the People's Artist of the USSR, will mark her jubilee with a concert at the Bolshoi Theatre Facebook: congratulations to artists on their birthdays; repeat of the broadcast of the W orld Ballet Day October 19th - the Bolshoi Theatre marked the 5th anniversary of the Young Singers Opera Program with a performance of "Così fan tutte, ossia La scuola degli amanti" October 23rd - the ballet "A Legend of Love" on the Historic Stage. Major revival New Stage - La fille mal gardee. Ballet in two acts Historic Stage - rehearsal day Mass media about the Theatre A video about the Bolshoi souvenir shop that opened recently is available on the Bolshoi Theatre's YouT ube Channel: www.bit.ly/1wj5F2J theatres cannot wait for a long time; they need rather young singers, whose appearance and age coincides with the images of, say, Romeo and Juliette that audiences have. Here at the Bolshoi we are trying to focus on preparing the most talented young singers to work at the theatre; this involves both pedagogical and financial efforts. It is like a small factory that produces something extremely expensive and exclusive. As for the young singers' interests, they need to be motivated and driven by creative opportunities and interesting projects that can give them room for professional growth and development. This is what our young artists are dreaming about most of all". The Young Artists Opera Program was set up at the Bolshoi Theatre in October 2009. For two years young singers and pianists from Russia and the CIS countries, selected on the basis of auditions, are coached in different disciplines, including voice studies, stage movement and acting skills, foreign languages and most important - attendance at master-classes given by famous singers and repetiteur- coaches. Each of the programme participants is also provided with plenty of opportunites to perform on stage, singing supporting roles in the Theatre's current productions and understudying the Opera Company's lead singers. Over the five years of the Program's existence there have been 14 opera premieres starring the Program's participants, 18 concerts at the Beethoven Hall and 6 concerts of the Bolshoi Theatre Symphony Orchestra, which young singers have taken part in as well. The Young Artists Opera Program has gone on tours to different cities of the world, including Rome, Nice, Paris, Avignon, Compiègne, Berlin, San Francisco, New York, Sofia, Baku, Kiev, Ekaterinburg, Klin, Khabarovsk… "If the regions take the initiative, the Bolshoi Theatre is ready to go on tours" The Bolshoi Theatre General Director Vladimir Urin discusses how to present the productions of Russia's main theatre to the citizens of Russia Photo: Izvestia/Vladimir Suvorov Starting from 2015 Russia's major music theatre will join the program "Big Tours". A reporter of "Izvestia" talked to the Bolshoi Theatre General Director Vladimir Urin. - How do you feel about becoming a part of "Big Tours"? - This is a wonderful idea. I come from Kirov, a provincial town, so I know very well how important tours of a big theatre are for a town that does not really have diversity in terms of theatre productions. I remember how much tours of Perm and Sverdlovsk Opera and Ballet Theatres, as well as guest performances of the Ivanovo Theatre of Operetta meant to me. So the idea to organize some center that would coordinate those tours and, moreover , would partially take care of financial issues, associated with organizing those tours, is very sound. I know that the first results are very inspiring: "Pyotr Fomenko Workshop" has recently visited Kirov and Kirov citizens were very enthusiastic when they shared their impressions with me. - Have you negotiated anything with Eugene Shermeneva, the Head of the Federal Support Center of tour activities? - We have discussed a whole range of issues, including the ones that are connected with the Bolshoi Theatre. We have one offer from Samara. The 70th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War will be celebrated next year; during the war our theatre was evacuated to Samara. At the moment we have an oral invitation to go there. I voiced this idea to Eugene Shermeneva and he supported it. A Bolshoi Theatre tour is an expensive project; if the city's authorities are interested in this tour and are ready to support us, we will be happy to go there. W e have discussed another important issue - theatre venues. There are quite a few venues that can host the Bolshoi Theatre, but, as a rule, they exist in the cities that have their own music theatres. However, there definitely are not enough music productions in Russia, and there are rather few opportunities to show them as well. We need to understand that in our time there will not appear well-equipped music theatres all over Russia. This is not something that we need either . So we discussed opportunities to have concert performances in cases where the stage is not suitable for a real performance. It can be a concert version with some stage elements, a joint concert of opera and ballet leading soloists or guest performances of leading soloists… Repertoires of many theatres are the same, especially when it comes to classics. Local authorities will always find money to pay the soloists' travelling expenses and to provide their accommodation and fees. If the Federal Support Center of tour activities agrees to pay some of those expenses, there will be no problem at all. At the same time even if two, three of four soloists that perform leading parts come, it is already a great event for a city . - As far as I understand, leading soloists have their schedules planned several seasons ahead. Will they agree to perform in Siberia instead of performing in La Scala? - If the theatre goes there on tour , this will not be an issue for discussion. Soloists have certain responsibilities. Artists can go to La Scala, Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Ballet or the Royal Opera only in case they have nothing going on at the Bolshoi. This is a very strict condition. If you want to be a freelancer, you are welcome. But in this case you will be a guest soloist at the Bolshoi. Besides, not everything depends on those responsibilities; I cannot remember a single case when this or that artist said he/she would not perform in some region. Audiences in the regions are not as spoiled as in the capital; artists get a completely different kind of energy from spectators. They perform a lot around Russia and they like it. - Will the Bolshoi Theatre voice any preferences when it comes to guest performances? - No, it will not. We have a task from the government and we should work in Moscow . W e should have performances on two, and sometimes on three stages every day. There are certain criteria when it comes to the number of performances, and if we fail to meet those, our funding can be reduced. Each performance in Moscow earns us the sum of money that we will never earn when we go on tour to some region. So we are not interested in foisting ourselves on someone; we are not interested in doing it from the financial perspective either. W e are ready to go on tours, but the initiative should come from regions. If regional administrations are interested in the Bolshoi Theatre, they should make an offer to Eugene Shermeneva and to us. We will take a look at our schedule, choose a date and then we will discuss organizational and financial issues. I am deeply convinced that three parties should meet. If the host party is not interested, we should not go there. This is very simple.

October 19th - the Bolshoi Theatre marked the 5th anniversary of the Young Singers Opera Program with the performance of "Così fan tutte, ossia La scuola degli amanti" October 23rd - the ballet "A Legend of Love" on the Historic Stage. Major revival Historic Stage - rehearsal day New Stage - rehearsal day Mass media about the Theatre An exhibition, marking the jubilee of Elena Obraztsova, opened at the Memorial Estate of Fyodor Chaliapin. On October 28th the singer will be feted at the Bolshoi Theatre The joint exhibition of the Bolshoi Theatre Museum and the Russian Museum of Ethnography (Saint-Petersburg) opened in Belfast (Northern Ireland) The bicentennial of Mikhail Lermontov's birthday was celebrated in Russia The bicentennial of Mikhail Lermontov's birthday was celebrated everywhere. Celebrations took place in St. Petersburg, Pyatigorsk, Moscow and in Penza Oblast. Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, came to the museum-reserve "Tarkhany", the Lermontovs' family estate, where the future literary genius was raised. Vladimir Putin had a look around the estate complex. All buildings in "Tarkhany" as well as the dam of the Barsky pond have been renovated. The President also had a look at the two-stored manor-house, where Mikhail Lermontov spent his childhood. Almost all furniture which was in this room two hundred years ago, has been re-created. There also are the poet's personal belongings and about five hundred of his pencil sketches. Vladimir Putin visited the chapel of the vault of the Lermontov family and put flowers on the poet's grave. The Bolshoi Theatre was the center of the celebration in Moscow . The gala-concert, marking the bicentennial of Mikhail Lermontov's birthday, took place there. Viewers of the TV Channel "Culture" had a chance to see the recording of the concert on Sunday at 6.40 p.m. The opera "Masquerade" by Alexander Mosolov had been prohibited for a long time; it had not been performed for many years. The author was accused of "formalism"; at first the Soviet power prohibited him, and later he was arrested. Only "Nina's Romance" was left in the archives; at the gala the orchestra version of the romance was performed. This was the world premiere of this piece. In the 20th century the interest to Lermontov's body of work has remained very strong, as well as it does today . Eduard Artemyev , a composer and a People's Artist of Russia considers: "He is not only a poet and a great philosopher; it looks like the time to discover him has not come yet". There were paintings of modern artists in the Bolshoi Theatre foyer. Famous artists and literary historians were ready to talk about their image of this poet. A literary historian Tatiana Molchanova said "Lermontov is about dignity and respect for people; but this dignity and this respect are expressed through mocking the platitudes and wickedness of the society . This is what Lermontov is about". The set was minimalistic; there were no complex decorations in order not to distract from the main focus, the poet's words. His word is very well-known to lots and lots of people from their high school years. The poet's body of work is also well-known thanks to romances by Glinka, Rubinstein and Balakirev . The singer Julia Mazurova admits: "My life has been connected with Lermontov for a long time, since I was studying at the conservatoire. There is a lot of power and passion in Lermontov's poems". It was the first time after the October revolution that pieces by Cui and Ippolitov-Ivanov were performed. The authors of the project tried not only to surprise the audience with music rarities, but also to demonstrate how Lermontov's poetry exists in dif ferent styles and epochs. Y uri Laptev , a director and a People's Artist of Russia, explains: "We wanted to show how he influenced other artists and how his creative work inspired them. We wanted to walk this path after Lermontov and to show what the world got and how it became more diverse". Evgeny Volkov , the music director of the project, says: "This concert is our big meeting with Lermontov; we meet with our geniuses every day and we move forward together with them. They teach us". Everyone said how relevant this poet and his works were today, using Lermontov's words: he is the hero of not only his or our , but, actually , any time. These include fragments of the suite for the film "The Song About the Merchant Kalashnikov", composed by M. Ippolitov-Ivanov . The music was composed in 1909 specifically for the silent film "The Song About the Merchant Kalashnikov". Unfortunately, the film itself has not survived. This piece was written to mark the centennial of Lermontov's birth and has not been performed since. The program that was performed at the Bolshoi had 23 pieces of music. Opera in two acts Mass media about the Theatre "A Legend of Love". One of Yuri Grigorovich's best ballets will premiere on October 23rd 2014 The festival "Circle of Light" closed on October 14th. There was an amazing combination of light and sound, color and volume, smooth lines and sharp angles on the Bolshoi Theatre's façade most important: the singer's creative career symbolizes the prosperity of the Russian vocal school in the second half of the 20th century . Elena Obraztsova performed leading mezzo-soprano parts in the classical Russian and foreign repertoire and in the operas of the 20th century composers; she created a whole gallery of characters that have become living opera classics. The exhibition is organized at the Memorial Estate of F.I. Chaliapin, and this is not for nothing. Elena Obraztsova became the first Russian singer after Chaliapin whose appearance on the world opera stage had such a significant artistic resonance. T ogether with other musical luminaries Elena V. Obraztsova actively supported the idea to create the Museum of F. I. Chaliapin in Moscow , and presented concert programs there. The exhibition features materials from the All-Russian Museum Association of Musical Culture named after Mikhail Glinka and the Bolshoi Theatre museum, as well as the materials that were provided by the Elena Obraztsova Foundation and private collections. There are playbills and programs of performances, sketches of sets, phonograph records and CDs, books dedicated to the singer , her awards (including "Golden V erdi" award and "Russian National Olympus" award) and stage and concert costumes (the singer's repertoire includes about 40 parts). Various characters, episodes of rehearsals and life behind the scenes are reflected in the works of famous photographers (V. Gende-Rote, L. Pedenchuk, G. Solovyov , A. Stepanov and others) and in amateur pictures. Some valuable exhibits come from the singer's private collections. Video fragments of opera productions, concerts, TV films and drama productions will be demonstrated. The organizers of the exhibition tried not only to reflect the main events of the singer's biography , but also tried to demonstrate all the numerous sides of the world culture's unique phenomenon, named "Elena Obraztsova". The All-Russian Museum Association of Musical Culture named after Mikhail Glinka makes its own contribution to the great singer's anniversary - it opens the exhibition, filled with love for Obraztsova's art. Elena V. Obraztsova was the first visitor of the exhibition; then she opened it for the guests.

October 1 - the first-ever live broadcast from behind the scenes: five world-famous ballet companies - step by step, during the whole day Historic Stage - La Traviata. Opera in two acts New Stage - rehearsal day W orld Ballet Day live Broadcast from behind the scenes at the Bolshoi Theatre: www .youtube.com/watch?v=ddf3pLzNSzA&list=UUUimBc08CcsoCvP_WlYJl0Q The new season at the Bolshoi opened with the concert version of "The Maid of Orleans" by P. T chaikovsky . This was the successful debut of the Bolshoi's chief conductor Tugan Sokhiev . Photo: Damir Yusupov Playing with fire The Bolshoi Theatre opened its new season with the concert version of the opera "The Maid of Orelans" by P. T chaikovsky . It was the successful debut of the theatre's new chief conductor Tugan Sokhiev . The concert version of the opera looked like a real premiere. Photo: Damir Yusupov "The Maid of Orleans" was composed after "Eugene Onegin" and it is much less popular . It is also less popular than "The Queen of Spades" and some other operas by Tchaikovsky; it is not even in the repertoire of the Mariinsky Theatre, where it premiered in 1881. This is one of the reasons why the Bolshoi Theatre made the right decision to choose this opera; the capital theatre has been following Valery Gergiev for too many years. "The Maid of Orleans" was staged at the Bolshoi in 1990s; the production, created by Boris Pokrovsky , had Gothic style and atavisms of the grand style. The opera about Joan of Arc is not a chamber piece; it was created following the model of the French grand opera with mass choir numbers and hymns, bright arias and ensembles, organ and trumpets backstage, a ballet in the second act and the solemn and sad atmosphere of the auto-da-fe in the finale. The flute portrayed the tongues of fire with real mastery and pleasure; the other instruments followed. There is also the influence of "Aida" by Verdi, which was staged at the Mariinsky Theatre during the time when Tchaikovsky was composing "The Maid of Orleans"; Maria Kamenskaya, who later performed the part of Joan, sang the part of Amneris. After the intimate "Onegin", which Tchaikovsky composed for himself, his goal was to create a spectacular piece that would bring him fame. This goal was not achieved. He became famous for his other operas. Still, even though "The Maid of Orleans" is not as powerful as "Les Huguenots" by Giacomo Meyerbeer or "The Jew" by Jacque Fromantal Galevi, its strengths are not limited to the aria "Farewell you native hills and fields". There is a lot of great music in this opera, which provides the singers with the opportunity to demonstrate all their skills. T ugan Sokhiev , who chose "The Maid of Orleans" for his debut, felt not only the audience's need for the restoration of the grand style, but also the social context, which demands seriousness and tension. This is exactly what Tchaikovsky in general and this opera in particular are about; in "The Maid of Orleans" the war is a national business, which is blessed by God. Just like "Onegin", where Tchaikovsky interpreted Pushkin's ironic intonation with sincere lyricism, "The Maid of Orleans" brings back the pathos of this story , which was reduced in the frivolous poem by V oltaire. The positions can differ , but, as the opera by Tchaikovsky has just told us, it is not the right time for jokes. Not a single director added his own meaning to the score: the opera was performed twice in the concert version, which gave it some qualities of a sacred oratorio, a kind of a church game. Perhaps, only the duet "Oh, wonderful sweet dream" distracted the audience from this game. The Bolshoi's stage was decorated with some wooden constructions that reflected the sound of the orchestra and the choir , positioned in an amphitheatre, just like it is done in the West. Tugan Sokhiev's method and approach can be considered Western as well; he has gained most of his conducting experience in Europe. Newsletter
